Grape Varieties by Appellation – AOP Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence

Below are grape varieties that conform to AOP Aix-en-Provence classification.  Varieties identified in black are red (also called “black”) grapes and those in green are white grapes.

The proportion by grape variety (specified below) refers to the percentage of the total area of the vineyard that must to be planted with a specific variety (referred to as encépagement).  Some AOP/AOC regulations will also specify a proportion of the blend (referred to as assemblage) for a given color of wine in order to be classified as an AOP/AOC wine.

Red Cinsaut, Counoise, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan Must include at least two principal varietals.

The proportion of Grenache must greater then or equal to 20 % of the total.

The proportion of the total of the secondary varietals must be less than or equal to 30% of the total.

The red wines must be blended with at least 2 grape varieties with at least one being a principal grape variety.  The blend must consist of the principal variety or varieties being greater than of equal to 50% of the blend.
Rosé Cinsaut, Grenache, Syrah Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Counoise, Mourvèdre Must include at least two principal varietals.

The proportion of Grenache must greater then or equal to 20 % of the total.

The proportion of the total of the secondary varietals must be less than or equal to 30% of the total.

For rosés, the proportion may include the grape varieties listed for white below as long as it is less than or equal to 20 % of the total.

The rosé wines must be blended with at least 2 grape varieties with at least one being a principal grape variety.  The blend must consist of the principal variety or varieties being greater than of equal to 50% of the blend.

 

White Vermentino Clairette, Grenache, Sauvignon Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Bourboulenc, Sémillon The proportion of Vermentino must be greater than or equal to 50 % of the total.

The proportion of the secondary varietals must be greater than or equal to 30 % of the total.

The white blend proportion of grapes or wine must be in the same proportion as was planned for the plantings.
