Grape Varieties by Appellation – AOP Côtes du Vivarais

Below are grape varieties that conform to AOP Côtes du Vivarais classification. Varieties identified in black are red (also called “black”) grapes and those in green are white grapes.

The proportion by grape variety (specified below) refers to the percentage of the total area of the vineyard that must to be planted with a specific variety (referred to as encépagement). Some AOP/AOC regulations will also specify a proportion of the blend (referred to as assemblage) for a given color of wine in order to be classified as an AOP/AOC wine.

Red Grenache, Syrah Cinsaut, Marselan The proportion of Grenache must be greater than or equal to 30% of the total proportion.

The proportion of Syrah must be greater than or equal to 40% of the total proportion.

The proportion of the secondary varieties must be less than or equal to 10% of the total proportion.

The blend must have a proportion of Grenache that is greater than or equal to 30% of the blend.

The blend must have a proportion of Syrah that is greater than or equal to 40% of the blend.

Rosé Grenache, Syrah Cinsaut, Marselan The proportion of Grenache must be between 60% to 80% of the total proportion.

The proportion of Syrah must be greater than or equal to 10% of the total proportion.

The proportion of the secondary varieties must be less than or equal to 10% of the total proportion.

The blend must have a proportion of Grenache that is between 60% to 80% of the blend.

White Grenache Blanc ClairetteMarsanne, Roussane, Viognier The proportion of Grenache Blanc must be greater than or equal to 50% of the total proportion.

The combined proportion of Clairette and Marsanne must be greater than or equal to 30% of the total proportion.

The combined proportion of Roussane and Viognier must be less than or equal to 30% of the total proportion.

The blend proportion of Grenache Blanc must be greater than or equal to 50% of the total proportion.

The blend proportion of Clairette and Marsanne must be greater than or equal to 30% of the total proportion.

The blend combined proportion of Roussane and Viognier must be less than or equal to 20% of the total proportion.
